As part of our House Spirits & Domestic Ritual Magic Series: Reading rituals aren’t about rules or routines — they’re about atmosphere, intention, and emotional immersion. This post explores why some readers naturally create rituals around certain stories, and why a mood-rich, gothic-lite romance invites a slower, more sensory way of reading.

Books and Reading Rituals for Readers

Some books are read anywhere — on the bus, between appointments, listened to or read while half-distracted in the subway or waiting for the bookstore to open for that once-a-year sale.

And then there are stories that somehow whisper more.

Your favorite cup set down beside you.

That pause as your hand skims down the first page.

Creating a sense that this is not a book to rush but to indulge in.

Maybe it’s the weight of a specific mug in your hands. The way you angle the reading lamp just so. The plumping up of that pillow behind your back, the footstool you bring closer. The playlist you queue without thinking. These aren’t habits—they’re invitations, like a ritual to get you ready to read.

This is why reading rituals matter, not as a trend, but as more of a self-care moment for you to slow down and relax.

What Is a Reading Ritual?

A reading ritual is not a checklist.

And it isn’t a challenge or a productivity tool to help you skim the story.

It’s a personal way for how readers choose to enter a story. How creating a reading ritual starts with understanding that it’s not just about opening the page and picking up where you left off, I get that. This is about setting the mood before that very first chapter, and allowing you the space and time to linger once you’re inside.

Rituals don’t exist to make us read more.

Reading rituals exist to help us read deeper.

This is what makes reading rituals for fiction readers so powerful—they transform the act of reading into an atmospheric fiction reading experience.

Why Readers Have Always Ritualized Stories

Long before modern publishing, storytelling was already ritualistic.

Stories were told:

  • Around the campfire, or the family home’s hearth
  • Story time was told under the stars to end the day, allowing the imagination to dream deep into the night
  • It was also for celebrating seasons, winter or summer, and to help those healing or grieving

The act of preparing to hear a story mattered as much as the story itself.

Today, readers recreate this in different ways — just by carving out a moment that belongs solely to the book in their hands. Not while sitting in traffic, or on the bus, or while doing the housework. But more about that simple moment of actually being still and letting the mind do a deep dive into the story.

Why Certain Genres Invite Reading Rituals More Than Others

Not every book asks for a ritual — and that’s important.

Fast-paced reads thrive on momentum.

Comfort reads thrive on familiarity.

And there is no harm in listening to that story while you’re tackling the housework.

But when it comes to atmospheric fiction — particularly gothic-lite, magical, or emotionally immersive romance — these stories thrive on your full presence so you don’t miss the details that are there for a reason…

These stories rely on:

  • mood over speed
  • feeling over action
  • remembering those moments and taking in the atmosphere

A reading ritual might be that bridge you can build to help you go from the real world and into the emotional space of the story. This slow reading practice allows the story to unfold at its own pace, in its own way, so you get to enjoy the story deeper.

Creating a Reading Ritual Is Optional — And That’s the Point

The power of a ritual lies in choice.

Some readers will never light a candle or set a mood or have that special reading chair at home,  and that’s totally okay.

Others may find that a small, intentional pause before reading allows the story to unfold more fully.

There is no wrong or right way.

There is only your way.

The freedom is what keeps your reading rituals meaningful, rather than something you must do, which kind of kills the idea behind it.

Reading Rituals and Forget Forever

When I wrote Forget Forever, I knew it was the kind of story that begged to be read slowly.

It’s a book shaped by atmosphere, and where so much more is shared within those quiet spaces between the moments. And for readers who enjoy that kind of immersion, I created a bespoke Reading Ritual as a private companion to the novel.

It isn’t required.

Or instructional.

It exists simply as an invitation for readers who want to step into Forget Forever’s story with all their senses engaged. And for me, it was a way to honor both the reader and the story world they’re entering. I did it for you.

A Final Thought about Reading Rituals

Reading rituals aren’t about aesthetics or trends.

They’re about giving you permission to slow down and let that story take up space in your life — even briefly.

And in a world that constantly asks us to rush, that may be the most radical part of all.

Maybe you have a reading ritual and don’t realize it, or haven’t given it a name. You know that moment of putting the dog to bed, turning off the lights in the house, checking on the kids as they sleep, then climbing into bed, plumping up your pillows, with your lamp glowing softly beside you, only then you take that deep breath as pick up your book or kindle and dive into that storyworld. That’s a reading ritual of your own design.
