So location in romance isn&#8217;t just a dot on a map, but a place where moody magic becomes the heartbeat beneath the floorboards.<\/p>\n<p>And I love making those places come alive.<\/p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/forget-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forget Forever<\/a>, I wanted every plank, every window, every whiff of soap and<a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/scent-story-superstion-the-simmer-pot-tradition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> simmer pot<\/a> to feel like the setting was a character in its own right. It&#8217;s what I&#8217;m known for.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230; why here? Why another small town? Why this manor?\u00a0 Find out why settings and location in romance matter&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>1. A Moody Manor for a Moody Ghost<\/h2>\n<p>I went all out with Strathmuir <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/spooky-manors-in-romance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Manor<\/a> because, well, Lucien MacArloch needed somewhere<a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/ghosts-in-romance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> worthy to haunt.<\/a> Coming from a proud family of aristocrats, you don&#8217;t house a<a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/what-makes-a-gothic-hero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> gothic ghost<\/a> in a weatherboard in the suburbs, do you?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>You give him:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stained-glass windows that glare like judgmental aunties<\/li>\n<li>Long black marble corridors lined with precious artwork<\/li>\n<li>Sweeping staircases and chandeliers<\/li>\n<li>And a private library that might just win the heart of a <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/the-librarian-whod-rather-shelve-books-than-do-small-talk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small-town librarian<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. Autumn Hits the Page Like a Mood Board Come to Life<\/h2>\n<p>You know I love a seasonal metaphor. And <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/fall-vs-autumn-naming-a-season-when-you-dont-have-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autumn<\/a> was the perfect one for this story because it brings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The wondrous landscape display of reds and russet oranges of leaves dropping like confetti from trees<\/li>\n<li>Harvest festivals and other small-town festivals<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s pulling on jumpers and the crackle of fireplaces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s atmosphere. And <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/fall-vs-autumn-naming-a-season-when-you-dont-have-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autumn<\/a> is the perfect vibe for<a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/forget-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a slow-burn romance<\/a> filled with secrets and shadows.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>3. Ashwick \u2014 The Ambiguous Small Town That Could Be Anywhere<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve written more than <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/books\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">25+ books set in small towns<\/a>\u2014because clearly I have a type. And in <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/forget-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forget Forever<\/a>, the small town of Ashwick is intentionally ambiguous. No state, no coordinates to find a GPS signal or even a dot on a map. Yet, it could be anywhere in a place that holds:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Those small libraries<\/li>\n<li>The locals who wave at you from across the street<\/li>\n<li>That one caf\u00e9 where everyone goes for all the gossip<\/li>\n<li>And a hero that they all whisper about\u2014<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Small towns are my jam. Always have been. Probably always will be. And this small town has plenty of dirt to share on the neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>4. Cottages, Cardigans, and Cake Crumbs<\/h2>\n<p>Look, <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/cottagecore-for-romance-readers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cottagecore<\/a> absolutely earns its place in this story. Because cottages soften the edges of romance. They&#8217;re a warm and cozy place that carries the scent of endless cakes. They make the perfect setting for romance readers to nestle on the couch by a cosy fire, and pick up the perfect book to suit that vibe.<\/p>\n<p>Even though <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/forget-forever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forget Forever<\/a> leans into a <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/what-is-gothic-lite-romance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moody gothic vib<\/a>e with the manor, the cottagecore aesthetic brings a nostalgic balance to this story, making the romance feel like a sigh you didn&#8217;t know you needed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>5. The Atrium<\/h2>\n<p>Now this is where it gets delicious.<\/p>\n<p>I chose the manor&#8217;s conservatory, known as <em>The Atrium<\/em>, because:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The image of plants trapped under glass ceilings is a metaphor I couldn&#8217;t resist<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s gothic-light but not a <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/modern-witchy-cottagecore-for-romance-readers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">witchy greenhouse<\/a><\/li>\n<li>It has exotic plants, orchids, and ferns that the Lord of the Manor calls<em> postcards of the past<\/em>. Readers familiar with my books will recognise this term\u2014and know there&#8217;s a reason for it&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Forget Forever&#8217;s Overall Vibe<\/h2>\n<p>The season and the <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/spooky-manors-in-romance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">manor sets the mood<\/a>.
