What That Word Actually Means"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dark fantasy romance: what does the label mean, and what category does that put my new Gothic Romantasy duology, Paradox Accords book 1<em>: <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/awakened-ash-and-alchemy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Awakened Ash and Alchemy<\/a><\/em>, that has a <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/what-is-the-fated-mates-trope\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fated mates bond<\/a>, a hero whose world calls him a monster, and a castle full of secrets\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>What Does \u201cDark Fantasy Romance\u201d Actually Mean?<\/h2>\n<p>Dark fantasy romance, usually shortened to \u201cdark romantasy\u201d, is a subgenre that blends fantasy world-building with the mature content of dark romance, all built around a central love story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The genre\u2019s defining traits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Morally grey leads: <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/what-makes-a-gothic-hero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-heroes<\/a>, villains, assassins, sometimes literal monsters, cast as the love interest<\/li>\n<li>Grim, <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/what-is-magical-atmospheric-romance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">atmospheric<\/a> worlds:<a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/how-to-tell-if-gothic-romance-is-right-for-you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> gothic<\/a> horror, forbidden magic, warring kingdoms, oppressive supernatural societies<\/li>\n<li>High stakes: curses, executions, war, trauma, survival<\/li>\n<li>Mature content: explicit sexual content, violence, and taboo or triggering themes as the norm, not the exception<\/li>\n<li>They do have a happy ending: however dark the road, the genre promises that somehow the love survives<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sounds grim, huh!<\/p>\n<p>But let&#8217;s go even deeper&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Dark Romance vs. Dark Fantasy Romance \u2014 Where the \u201cDark\u201d Actually Comes From<\/h2>\n<p>The two get lumped together, but the darkness comes from different places.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dark romance: its real-world settings are like mafia, corporate, contemporary. The danger lives <em>inside<\/em> the relationship itself, usually based on an obsession, some form of manipulation, and a lot of non-consent.<\/li>\n<li>Dark fantasy romance: has secondary worlds, curses, monsters, empires. The darkness is usually driven by the world or a character\u2019s nature.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s the test that actually matters: violence toward the protagonist isn\u2019t automatically \u201cdark.\u201d It\u2019s when the violence from one lead toward the other is what&#8217;s makes it dark romance. Commonly, he&#8217;ll hurt her.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and Dark Romance usually comes with \u2018Trigger Warnings.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>So\u2026 Is Paradox Accords Dark Romantasy?<\/h2>\n<p>No \u2014 and we took it around the block to test our theory (via various social media forums and readers for their feedback)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/paradox-accords\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paradox Accords<\/a> does share a few surface-level tropes common with dark romantasy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a fated bond neither character chose<\/li>\n<li>captivity and forced proximity<\/li>\n<li>a power imbalance of sorts<\/li>\n<li>and a hero the world brands a monster.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On paper, that sounds like the genre. Right?<\/p>\n<p>But dark romantasy is defined by where the <em>fear<\/em> comes from \u2014 and in <a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/awakened-ash-and-alchemy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Awakened Ash and Alchemy<\/em><\/a>, it never comes from Captain Zarek, our MMC. He\u2019s enormously powerful, and there\u2019s a real imbalance between them based on his status in his world, where Angela doesn\u2019t even believe in magic.<\/p>\n<p>But he also <em>protects<\/em> her, never controls her, or makes her feel small in any way. Any imbalance is a source of tension, not a source of harm. In fact, Captain Zarek goes out of his way not to harm her, especially when his magic burns! Literally.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>What you\u2019ll find in Paradox Accords:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/magic-blog\/paranormal-romance-vs-gothic-fantasy-romance-whats-the-difference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gothic atmosphere<\/a> and a castle full of twisty corridors<\/li>\n<li>A law that forbids a certain kind of love<\/li>\n<li>Soul-snatching creeps lurking in dark alleyways<\/li>\n<li>A hero the world fears \u2014 and misreads<\/li>\n<li>World-building that gets more troubling the deeper you dig<\/li>\n<li>And rain. That\u2019s part of the gothic vibe list, right?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>What you won\u2019t find in Paradox Accords:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Violence or cruelty between the leading couple<\/li>\n<li>Humiliation<\/li>\n<li>Non-consent that causes harm<\/li>\n<li>A romance built to feel unsafe<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dark fantasy romance is when the romance itself stops feeling safe. That\u2019s not what you\u2019ll find in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/melarowe.com\/awakened-ash-and-alchemy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Awakened Ash and Alchemy<\/a>. <\/em>It\u2019s a book that doesn\u2019t come with trigger warnings.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>What Paradox Accords Actually Is<\/h3>\n<p>Gothic fantasy romance \u2014 not dark romantasy. It just has the same DNA as a dark fantasy with its tension and high-stakes danger and drama.
