How to Indulge in a Fabulous Buffalo Christmas

When you have a buffalo as the star of your outback romance series. Elsie Creek, by Mel A ROWE #outbackauthor #ElsieCreek

It’s more than Christmasy-food-comas and hiding from relatives, as we learn how to indulge in a fabulous Buffalo Christmas by starting with…

What is a Buffalo Christmas?

Well, first you find a whopping big water buffalo.

The regular places to look for one are water holes or billabongs, where they like to wallow free from crocodiles. And generally found in the Northern Territory outback.

If you can’t find one, you can just pretend by doing the following…

Dress up to attend your Buffalo Christmas.

Everyone dresses up (or down) for Christmas lunch, depending on where you are.

Normally in the outback, we’re wearing shorts and singlets looking for some cold water to wallow in, like a buffalo, preferably a pool.

You eat like a buffalo at Christmas

Food isn’t eaten by fingers but other alternatives such as face-diving, food fights, slurping, and long tongue swipes sound as inviting as a toddler’s birthday party. However, food is served on plates (big ones) where you’ll discover that the buffalo is quite the delicate eater to even score a nod of approval from even the pickiest of food snobs.

Then you eat as much as a buffalo, which isn’t hard because there is so much food available at Christmas, that your latest diet dashes for the door until the New Year.

You’ll suddenly love those new clothes your aunt gave you because they come with elastic waistbands (because aunts are smart like that). And, thankfully there won’t be any paparazzi stalking our backyards, allowing us to indulge in a guilt-free feast like a buffalo at Christmas.

And then you…

Nap.

Because this is where that buffalo-sized Christmas-food-coma kicks in.

You’ll search for some serious time-out to cradle your overfull belly, as your brain hits mush mode from repeated polite talk of: ‘Hi, how are you Yeah, the kids are doing fine Oh, sorry, that’s just an exotic Christmas beetle that has escaped from my son’s bug collectionto the relatives you won’t see until next Christmas.

And all that pressure that normally comes with this silly season is nothing more than breadcrumbs scattered across the tablecloth holding the leftovers that won’t fit into the refrigerator.

The Buffalo Christmas Aftermath

Your brain is too tired to read the instructions for your husband’s new boy toy—because we all know he’ll never read them. But you can bet he’ll say, ‘Why isn’t it working, hon?’

Your nerves are fried from bleeps, blips, bops, wheezes, swooshes, and mini-apocalyptic explosions, that you’ve hidden the backup batteries, praying your child’s new toys run out of juice soon.

There are remnants of Christmas paper hiding that present you hated from your second cousin’s new girlfriend that everyone avoids, to become future dust-bunnies until you find the energy to bend and lift! (This is where we mention they should make every gym membership null and void during this time period.)

But seriously…

He's just a guy looking for a forever fishing date in this rural/ outback romance: BUFFALO DUST
