I wanted to find how far a story travelled and so, I turned the tables and interviewed one of my readers.
Why?
Well, I live so far north in Australia, my books aren’t even sold here. There is no bookshop nearby, so it’s all online for me. But through the online world, I’ve had the fabulous honour of meeting some amazing avid book lovers.
Today, have I got a treat for you because I’d like to introduce you to my writer friend, and debut author—who is a fellow Territorian!!
And it’s a ‘Hello from S.E. Welsh’
Where in the world are you?
Darwin, Northern Territory!
What was your first impression of the Northern Territory (NT)?
When I first came to the Territory, I was blown away by how different everything was from country NSW where I grew up. The colours were richer, the scents more intense, and the heat…it felt more like Asia than Australia.
Describe what would be your perfect reading/writing date for yourself?
Did I mention I like quiet? Middle of the woods, a log cabin, and a cosy fire, maybe a spa bath. No kids.
Have you read any of the books in the Elsie Creek Series?
I have read the Elsie Creek books.
Am I allowed to like an animal best? I LOVE Cecil the water buffalo.
As for human characters, I may have been lucky enough to see an early copy of CAKED IN DUST and I may have a partiality for tattooed heroes of the emergency services variety. Jax…mmm….
Let’s hear about your DEBUT NOVEL, THE GAMBLE:
Connor Williams is haunted by the ghosts of the people he has lost and consumed by revenge against the forces that took them him. The Great War and all its horrors has left him a shell of the man he used to be. The only thing stopping him from becoming a monster is Sarah Dawson, the girl he’d left behind.
Sarah knows she’s in trouble. With her father dying and a floundering bakery to run, love is the last thing she needs. But Connor is a lure she can’t seem to resist. A shadow of the man she thought she would marry, this new Connor is darker than her childhood sweetheart and twice as magnetic. But Connor’s need for revenge is driving them apart. When Sarah’s nightmares all start to come true, she doubts Connor will be the man she needs him to be. The man he could be if only he’d allow love back into his heart.
Where did this amazing story come from?
I visited France and toured the battlefields of WW1. When I was there, I saw the graves of two brothers, age 19 and 16 who had died in the battle of Fromelles. The younger brother had been given a white feather (the sign of a coward) by the girl he was in love with and forged his documents in order to enlist. I kept thinking ‘what if the older brother survived? What would he do when he got home?’ and that was the basis for THE GAMBLE.
‘Ghosts don’t always sleep where bodies lie.’ The Gamble.
What is your favourite quote found within THE GAMBLE?
The first sentence! ‘Ghosts don’t always sleep where bodies lie.’ I have it tattooed on my arm.
Aaand that’s a wrap!
