Boys & Bedrooms

It all starts in the bedroom…

Were you a little girl who liked pink?

Pink walls.

Pink flowers on your curtains.

Pink sheets and pillows.

Or do you have a daughter who lets you buy the pink and purple glittery flower cushions and matching bed cover? Do they have the stuffed teddy near a pair of pink bunny slippers resting at the foot of the bed, below a set of pink flannelette pyjamas?

Now, picture that same room twenty years later…

Sun-burned faded curtains. Stuffed toys are missing an eye or an ear with the stitching barely hanging on. Walls,  now a shocking fluorescent pink, have the magnification of reflecting the bright sun it burns your eyes to look at them.

But wait, there’s more…

Every single nook and cranny displays all those triumphs and disastrous pieces of craftwork, gifts from family members and BFFs, and maybe even faint remnants of slumber parties.

Yep, all those childhood memories crammed into one room.

But what about the faded posters displaying the frozen images of Boy Bands

Boy Bands Roam Here

Remember boy bands?

Those young men plastered all over your walls, where you knew the words to every single song they never wrote?

They were there at every party while you grew up!

Would you still have them on some hidden playlist?

Did you know, there was at least one all-male singing group for nearly every generation through history.

So here’s just a few that all have B (for Boys) in their names:

♥ – The Beatles

♥ – The Bay City Rollers

♥ – New kids on the Block

♥ – Backstreet Boys

♥ – B2K (Boys of the Millenium) or as someone mentioned Boys to Kings?

Of course, there’s more, but I did say it would be a brief list.

But what about those who’d moved on from boy bands to become the solo artist?

There are those like Justin Timberlake from NYSNC.

Robbie Williams is another classic example and was in Take That.

Mark Wahlberg went on to even greater things after New Kids on the Block. And John Lennon, from the Beatles, is immortalised.

Is the boy band a phase of growing up?

I’m not picking on the boy band phenomenon.

I’ll admit, I still smile when I hear a familiar tune and the memories it carries.

Now, I get to watch the next generation adorn their walls with boy bands. Today its 5SOS (Five Seconds of Summer) where you’ll find them on my playlists.

All I’m saying is Boybands are iconic, and all a part of growing up. Do you agree?

Who was your favourite boy band?

Have you ever returned to your childhood bedroom after a long absence and got the shocking reminder of who you’d once worshipped?

Did you wince at the plastered walls, wondering what possessed you to gush over those guys?

This is what happened to Deanne in the novel, AVOIDING THE PITY PARTY.  She found herself having to move back home after outing her cheating fiance in the middle of their wedding. She had nowhere else to go but back to her childhood bedroom and suffer beside her quirky family.

For the single mother, Kat (Kathryn Jones), she returns to the small outback town, ELSIE CREEK, after sevens years away. This time, it’s her young daughter sleeping in her old bedroom and all those memories of her childhood are unearthed in The ART of DUST.

Then we have Emma, our introverted Party Planner who has the music for every occasion, in UNPLANNED PARTY. She knows what tune suits her parties to perfection, loves her boy bands and listens to them while working on her latest craft project that usually involves glitter.

No matter where or who, boy bands have been around forever, and no doubt will continue to be so in the future.

So, who was your favourite boy band?
