What are those romantic weather moments?

You can find them in many stories, everywhere.

Just picture a perfectly cool summer evening beside the still lake reflecting the moonlight. A breeze ever so slightly skims across the water, causing the candles to tenderly flicker on your dockside table set for two.

What about those wonderful summer beach reads and the season for summer romances?

Those enclosed space romance stories, where a couple is trapped inside a cabin through a blizzard.

How about racing those storm fronts to get home for Christmas?

Or dodging the rain under an umbrella to not get that bridal dress drenched for the wedding ceremony.

But then there is the real picture, where reality takes a bite out of the fantasy where you find yourself stuck, standing in the rain, miserably freezing, with your hair sticking to your skin as your makeup trickles down your face. Romantic, huh?

So let’s look at the fantasy and compare it to what’s real, just for fun – coz I’m in the mood!

boyfriends and rainy day quote by Mae West, for the romantic weather blog by Mel A ROWE

How can real-life weather situations create romance?

Reality:

In summer you suffer from sunburn and perspiration. The autumn wind-chafe. Or you are shivering as your lips turn blue while your nose runs. And let’s not forget the humid hair frizz that makes you look like some high school science project! How is a real-life (RL) heroine supposed to keep looking magazine-cover-gorgeous for the guy in a romance!

Because the hero of your story is meant to take his lady love just the way they are.

sighs with a whole lotta wishful thinking

summer storms, the ART of DUST by Mel a ROWE #ARTofDUST #ElsieCreek #Escape2HEA

Does real romance blossom in extreme weather?

Does being trapped in an enclosed space work for you as your see out a storm?

It is well known that fear makes a person react differently to a situation than if they were calmly sipping their tea as the rain falls softly.

So, suffering through a wizard-of-oz cyclone where trees are whipped around like feathers under the noise of a thousand jet engines would not allow for the subtleties of dinner conversation! Would it?

Watching weather reports together isn’t really romantic, right? Unless you are expected to hop on a plane for that romantic getaway.

But movies about the weather, well…

Romantic weather movie moments:

As I open my cupboard of secreted romantic DVD’s that I have started collecting since forever. Yes, it exists. And, as there are many, I’ll only choose a few. I run my finger along the titles to find the movie to fit our weather theme and aha first cover is…

(*drumroll)

Twister—it’s iconic and a classic romance with a twist. Ha.

Groundhog Day—is about a snarky weatherman who ends up finding love.

The Notebook—for that ultimate rain kiss.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s—for another one of that magical rain-kissing-moments.

Sweet Home Alabama— the finale of the beach, the rain, the lightning and that confession before their kiss…I might watch that one, today.

Edward Scissorhands— making magic with snow and ice.

Australia—after all that outback heat and dust where they’ve managed to create a magical moment of kissing in the rain!

Titanic—for romantic weather moments, umm, maybe not.

Chocalat`—a woman who follows the wind finds love.

Dirty Dancing—coz it’s a classical summer holiday romance with all the trimmings of summer, and watermelons.

27 Dresses—there are beachside weddings, and that amazing bar dancing song scene where they’d gone to avoid the rain and… Yeah, I might watch that one next.

Bridget Jones’ Diary—the windy car and puddle-splashing watery moments that ruin the romance (and her hair), then that kiss in the snow with the man who truly wins her heart.

A Christmas Prince on Netflix—it’s Christmas, he’s a prince, and there’s snow. Need I say more?

Memorable mention goes to:

Spiderman – has a really cool rain-kissing moment while he’s hanging upside down.

And there are thousands more.

What’s your favourite romantic movie moment? Do share and I’ll add it to the list.

Those romantic weather getaways

I’m sure you’ve seen the travel ads while scrolling aimlessly at your desk dreamily wishing to escape all that. Or that exotic holiday poster on the travel agent’s window in the supermarket as you wrestle your trolley of food and children to the car.

Do you get envious of those pert and perfect Instagram influencers who are always on holiday (pre-covid) lying on a beach in a bikini?

Mmm. What does the real picture look like?

Sand gets into everything; your shiny skin is slimy from the sunscreen as the saltwater dries out your hair. Then there’s sharks, stingers, crabs, poisonous fish, and crocodiles to add to that list of things that want to float in the water with you! Being stuck in the outback doesn’t seem all that bad now, does it?

Is Winter the most romantic time of year? Find out in the blog by Mel A Rowe.

Is winter the most romantic weather season?

So what about those wintry weekends in front of a roaring fire?

It helps to keep your frostbite at bay while you decide to sleep on that bearskin rug because you can only crawl along the floor, too sore and tired from skiing. It helps you avoid mirrors to not frown at that goggle’s tan around your eyes that makes you look like a skin-toned racoon’s mask!

Hold on… Let’s rewrite that!

Ah, winter, a time for images of a quaint log cabin with a roaring fireplace. It’s cold, it’s white, and it’s best to stay indoors making it the perfect time to cuddle up to the nearest warmest (hot) body you can find.

For those who get snow.

And winter.

For some of us, summer lasts all year round.

Is spring romantic? Find out in the blog by Mel A Rowe.

Does spring provide the most romantic weather?

Baby animals are bouncing in fields of wildflowers, where blossoms blanket the trees like candy floss.

It’s the perfect picnic weather and for those long lazy drives to the country sharing playlists and conversations.

Then reality kicks in:

You get to brush up on your own form of skipping while dodging bees in the grass, wasps around flowers, as the ants make a play for your picnic basket. Your eyes water as you try to sneeze politely, blurting like a trumpet into that tissue of sandpaper grinding at your throbbing red nose.

Where is the nearest pharmacy in all that country?

Is summer the most romantic weather?

Lazy beach strolls arm in arm as the waves slip like silk over the sand, with the moon glowing softly in the sky…

Or the late afternoon stroll hand-in-hand along the shoreline, perhaps a stroll for ice cream. A balmy cool breeze, the saltwater licks your toes, and he stares deep into your eyes, leans closer and…

Ouch!

The real picture:

You’re suffering a severe case of sunburn and no one can touch you!

And you have this flock of screeching seagulls that block out the sun eyeing off your melting ice cream while people start crowding the area for their perfect Instagram sunset shot.

Is autumn the most romantic time of the year?

You’re free before the hibernations of winter begins to share a brisk walk in the sunshine. Be sure to avoid stepping in goop during that romantic sloshy autumn stroll. But really, you don’t care, making your way down a country lane in the crisp autumn weather is perfect… Especially before you brace for those many incoming months of winter chills.

Autumn… mmm.

In the real world:

Well, for those who have autumn weather, doesn’t that mean rain? Wet. Cold. Rain. And lots of falling leaves? What is romantic in autumn?

How about that drop of icy rain as it trickles down your scalp, trailing down your neck, it wriggles down your spine, sending chills throughout your body.

All right, I’ll drop the sarcasm, for a bit.

Is rain romantic? Find out in the blog by Mel A Rowe.

Does rain make for the most romantic weather moments?

Rain stops many from working out, going out, and doing all those things you were meant to do. It’s raining, which usually means it’s cold, and you’re usually nice and warm inside, so why leave?

What makes rain turn people into homebodies who’ll share their blanket on the couch as you either read a book, side by side, or binge on Netflix. Is that romantic? And it’s real!

Now, if it’s warm rain…

How it shines like rainbows, where raindrops fall like confetti, invigorating your senses within a summer storm.  The smell of rain fills the air as everything becomes fresh and vibrantly green. Birds are celebrating the moment doing their individual aeronautical rain-dance. There’s a rhythm to the fall of rain spilling over the gutters, flipping from leaves like a cow flicks their ears. It’s a sound as soft and slow as a lullaby.

And that is real.

Rainy days allow you to just chill. Pick up that book by the window, pull on those socks, pour a cup of your favourite beverage, and let the words dance before your eyes. And if you’re with a loved one, even better…

☔Write a love letter to each other, turn it into a puzzle, then hide clues around the house for each other to find.

☔Pluck out that puzzle you’ve had since forever. You know the one sitting in the back of your closet. Start working on it while you wait for those cookies to bake.

☔Answer couples’ questionnaires found on Pinterest or this fun game or a book on couples games to play on date night.  It’ll solidify your relationship, using this time to reconnect with each other on a whole new level.

☔Plan for your next romantic getaway (taking in weather conditions), or create a list of couple goals for next year, or for in 5, 10, or 20 years from now.

☔Put on each other’s clothes to sort out (de-clutter) the wardrobe and make it a fun dress-up party on what stays, what goes…
